Information about Great Danes
A quality puppy is not expensive ~ it is priceless!
Size Standards
Height standards for Great Danes are written as follows: "The male shall not be less than 30 inches at the shoulders, but it is preferable that he be 32 inches or more, providing he is well proportioned to his height. The female shall not be less than 28 inches, but it is preferable that she be 30 inches or more, provided she is well proportioned to her height. Danes under minimum height must be disqualified." The AKC has no written weight standard, saying only that the dogs are well proportioned, although kennel clubs in other countries do have written weight standards, all writing that adult males should be 120 lbs or more, adult females 100 lbs or more.
Life Span
Like all giant breeds, the life span of the Great Dane is around 9 years. That's way too short, but much better than never having a Great Dane in your life at all. While other smaller breeds are just coming into middle age at 5 years, a Great Dane at 5 years would be entering old age.
You may hear some say the life span is only about 6-7. This is not true at all. Most Danes that have passed at such an early age have passed due to lack of knowledge of the breed. They may have been forced exercised beyond their limits or did not receive the proper low protein diet that a Dane needs. These two things are huge factors in the life span of your Dane.
With proper diet and care, I have seen many Danes live anywhere from 10-12.
A Few Do's and Don'ts
CHOOSING THE RIGHT FOOD FOR YOUR GREAT DANE
Great Danes
are capable of amazing growth! They will grow like weeds through the first 8 months and continue to grow rapidly through the first 18 months. It is crucial to "grow them slow", slow steady growth is key to proper development!
Proper protein levels are a must when feeding Great Danes. This will help avoid possible health problems such as Pano and Wobblers Syndrome. Light and lean is the general rule of thumb until about 2 years old.
Don't try for the biggest Dane in town; you can only run into problems. Your Great Dane will grow naturally and reach its full potential around 3 years of age.
Most knowledgeable Dane owners will agree, feeding Great Danes a premium dog food with protein levels no greater than 24%, and fat levels between 12% to 14%, is key to proper development.
Never feed your Great Dane puppy food!
Feeding Great Danes puppy food, even large breed formulas can have serious consequences. The protein and fat levels of most brand puppy foods are way too high for a growing Dane.
A great Dane grows faster than almost any other dog. This can already be a problem on its own. By adding too much protein you will only cause the growth to be more rapid. Your Dane WILL NOT GROW LARGER! Only faster, which can and will result in many health problems such as bone disease, joint problems, pano, and bloat. All of which can cause early death.
The Truth about Commercial Dog Food
Stroll through the pet section of your local market or pet store; see all those bags of dog food? Check out the picture on the front of the bag, probably fresh meats or chicken, looks tasty doesn't it? O.K., turn the bag over and read the first five ingredients, what's listed?
I'll take a guess, some type of byproducts, meal, Corn Meal, Grain, Beet Pulp, ground something or other, etc., and so on. Read a little further, probable some type of chicken or poultry fat (to make it taste better), you get the picture. Wow, are we feeding a dog or a cow?
Compare the ingredients to a natural premium dog food, just the first five ingredients for now. Turkey, Chicken, Chicken Meal, Barley, Brown Rice, potato and so on. I think we're onto something!
Typically the first 5 ingredients are a good indication of the foods quality; the first 3 ingredients are the primary protein sources. Are there meats listed in the important "first 3" spots, if not, your dog is not getting protein from meat, sad but true.
Basically, if you are buying a dog food from your local market, you are not giving your Dane the proper food!
